Sustainable Landscapes
...More than a Practice, it's a
Mindset
Our goal is to improve the health of the landscape so that is it requires
less maintenance in the future. We do this by breaking the
landscape into its three component parts: soil, water, and vegetation.
If all three are working together, we have done our best
to make this particular piece of property 'Sustainable'.
What Do These Projects Look Like?
Sustainable landscaping is a thought process, not a design style,
so it can look like just about anything. The methods we have developed
can be applied to every kind of landscape. Whether it's a
new commercial project or an existing residential site, we can help
make your property more environmentally friendly while saving
you money on long term operating costs.
How Sustainable is Different
We look at how the landscape functions as a system first and
the aesthetics follow.
Common Problems
| Soil Quality |
It all starts in the soil. Unhealthy or compacted soils have
reduced nutrients, reduced infiltration and often lead to increased
stormwater run-off pollution. |
| Unheathly Vegetation |
Stressed plants are usually a product of improper plant selection
and placement. If conditions aren't changed the plant
will decline and eventually die. |
Reduced Infiltration &
Increased Runoff |
Most landscapes have problems handling heavy rainfall and
drought. Problems range from temporary storm flooding and
sub-pump discharge to high irrigation costs. |
Sustainable
Solutions
| Soil |
The goal is to restore the soil so that it can support
healthy vegetation and filter pollutants. |
| Vegetation |
Using the right plant in the right place is critical
for healthy sustainable plantings. |
| Water |
Manage water on-site so that it can enhance
natural water cycles and reduce irrigation costs. |
If soils are healthy, plants are thriving,
and the site is using
its own water,
it will require less maintenance, fertilizer,
water, fuel, and, most importantly, money to maintain. |
